Fairtrade

A Fairtrade District

The West Yorkshire District has now been accredited as a Fairtrade District. We encourage churches within the District to actively support, wherever possible, both Fairtrade and locally grown and farmed produce. We have a District Fairtrade Group to promote Fairtrade within the District and to assist churches in becoming a Fairtrade church.

By requiring companies to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price), Fairtrade addresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives

Fairtrade Fortnight 2012

The 2012 Fairtrade Fortnight is challenging you to ‘Take a Step for Fairtrade’. Resources for Fairtrade Fortnight (27th February - 11th March) and beyond are now available to order. Within the West Yorkshire District we encourage churches to recognise 4th March 2012 as 'Fairtrade Sunday'.

Download your Action Guide here and order materials including posters, ‘Take a Step’ cards, leaflets and more. Look out for your Church Action Guide in the post and start planning for how you and your church will take a step for Fairtrade in 2012.

Fairtrade Resources

The Fairtrade Foundation website is the first stop for news, resources and information about Fairtrade, particularly the section on how to become a Fairtrade Church.

The Christian Aid and Traidcraft websites also have resources that churches can use. Need a speaker? Traidcraft have a network of people that can deliver presentations about Fairtrade. For more details click here. The Co-operative may be able to support local groups and events by providing Fairtrade goods.

Penistone, a town within the West Yorkshire District, is registered as a Fairtade town. You can find out more about the town's approach to Faitrade on their website.

Information about Fairtrade in the Bradford area is on the Bradford MBC website.

Buying Fairtrade Goods

On the Traidcraft website you can search for your local Traidcraft stockist. There is a network of retailers and individual Traidcraft supporters around the country who stock Traidcraft foods, crafts or both. The results of the search are shown on a map and you can zoom in or out or navigate around the map using the buttons on the top left of the map.

The Fairtrade Foundation website (www.fairtrade.org) also has details of Fairtrade products that are available from supermarkets and independent shops. On their Retail Products page you can search for the stockists of many different types of goods.

Look for the FAIRTRADE mark on products when you shop.

The Fairtraders Cooperative

There is an exciting initiative in Holmfirth, a co-operative shop that makes a difference to local and global communities. Three of the founding directors are members of Holmfirth Methodist Church. Fairtraders Cooperative's mission is to give customers a range of affordable ethical products which will have a positive impact on people and the planet. The shop's range includes gifts and crafts, ladies fashion, jewellery and fashion accessories, food and drinks, homeware and gardening, toys, books and stationary, health and well being.

The shop is at 32 Huddersfield Road Holmfirth, at the junction with Hollowgate just past Holmfirth Mill and is open 10am to 5pm on Tuesday to Saturday, 12 noon to 4pm on Sundays but is closed on Mondays. You can also browse and but online through the shop's website.
